LEGO Star Wars Club

It’s amazing how popular Star Wars still is more than thirty years after the release of the first film.  Our son was, and still is, a big fan of the movies and collected all the figures and spaceships that were brought out.  I’m sure he would have loved the LEGO Star Wars Club as another of his favorite toys was LEGO.

And how durable and inventive are the people at LEGO?  Living in the Orlando area I often visit Downtown Disney that has a dedicated Lego store and numerous models outside made out of LEGO bricks.  These offer great photo opportunities for the many visitors to the area.

In the UK, where we are from, they have a LEGOLAND theme park which is a very popular as it has attractions such as Miniland – a creation of models using about forty million bricks and features scenes such as Kennedy Space Center as well as landmarks in London and Europe.

LEGO is a timeless toy and is constantly being updated to keep up with the current top children’s movies and TV shows like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Thomas and Friends and Sponge Bob Squarepants.

When I owned a preschool in the UK some of the most used toys were DUPLO and LEGO.  I had a DUPLO train, zoo and a set that created cranes, diggers and trucks that needed the special screwdriver to put them together.  When a Winnie the Pooh series was introduced that became a firm favorite with the children.  The original LEGO bricks were also well liked and cars, houses castles and many fantasy buildings and vehicles were created from them.

Our three year old grandson is now the proud owner of all the crates of DUPLO and LEGO that were once used by the children in my preschool.  He loves creating weird and wonderful trains, cars and buildings to incorporate with his other toys.

I have always found LEGO to be a great toy to help with children’s development in so many ways.  Not only does it help them with their fine motor skills, because there are so many action figures and different themed sets it helps them develop pretend play as well.

In an age where electronic toys seem to be the “must haves” it is nice to see that LEGO and DUPLO are still popular with today’s generation of children.
